I’d suggest you move away from the idea of a “template” and focus more on what a User Story is, and how to employ them effectively. You can torture any opinion or idea into a standard format, but that’s not going to help you create great products.
So back to basics –
– a user story is created with the user(s). No user in the room? It’s not a user story.
– a user story is a placeholder for an ongoing conversation. In Extreme Programming (where user stories came from) you’d have an onsite customer you’d collaborate with during the development process. The best product owner’s I have worked with can serve as an onsite customer
– a user story is like a vacation photograph; it reminds the people in the room about what was discussed. If you can’t remember then take more pictures (ie split the story), and maybe record the conversations and keep the whiteboards.
– a user story is only ever a hypothesis about how you will create value; until it is being used and you have feedback, that hypothesis is untested
I’d strongly suggest readding Jeff Patton’s book on User Story Mapping; without that you’ll just get trapped in project-o-scrum with a huge backlog full of requirements-in-a-user-story format and fail slowly and expensively.
Of course you don’t HAVE to employ user stories. It’s okay not to be exploring the product space in an innovative way, if that’s not your business model. If you are rolling out infrastructure to meet a compliance requirement then maybe you *have* requirements, known upfront. If that’s the case, don’t waste time with a template (or indeed Scrum); get onboard with the Kanban Method, go lean, and deliver high quality with low cost…
Yes this is the format even we follow for a user story. Customer requirements are written as User story in simple English so that it’s understandable in fact as how customer perceives it.for example customer is looking for software to manage leave management for their employees.user stories for this requirement could be
1.As an employee i would like to apply leaves so that manager can approve
2.As a manager I would like to approve leaves so that employee can avail leaves.
Building entire leave application requirement we call it as epic and epic is set of all user stories -epic broken down to small size,buildable requirements.
Inside each user story we must write Acceptances criteria, so that becomes a checkpoint for user story completion.acceptance criteria is referred by entire team to see if they have built as per expectation.
